Spotlighting Rising Stars: On The Radar Radio’s Journey in Music Culture
On The Radar is a platform created by Gabe P, which started in 2018. Gabe created the brand while managing Power 105.1’s social media accounts in a vacant studio at the iHeart Music building. On The Radar was initially modest in scale; according to Gabe, from the summer of 2018 until 2019, he spoke with one to two musicians every week. Now, he produces anything between 10 and 12 new episodes per week, releasing them gradually over the course of a month, bringing the total up to dozens. Because it provides a forum for artists of all sizes to share their stories and present their bars, the radio program has amassed over 100,000 subscribers on its YouTube channel and has emerged as a key player in the developing New York drill scene.
The platform allows artists to showcase their passion and the confidence to get up in front of a live microphone broadcast for the show. Artists don’t need a certain number of followers or level of notoriety. The show is open to all artists of all followings. However, the platform also showcases high profiled artists such as, Drake, Lil’ Yachty and Ice Spice, just to name a few.
On The Radar has been very welcoming to artists of New Orleans and the surrounding areas, shining a light on artists such as, Geffen Records recording artist, Rob49, Roc Nation recording artist, Rjae, Milli’ano and A Different Breed ENT recording artist, Coyungin. Artists like Rob49 have graced the platform with crucial bars such as, “Murder capital where I’m from. If you die, they gon’ forget you.” Milli’ano, AKA Million$ also performed on the platform with a notable freestyle, with bars such as, “And when you great, they don’t solute, they mimic you.”
