Big Sean's 4-Year Plan To Build A Movie Theater In Detroit Is Finally Underway
Detroit, MI – Big Sean has always kept Detroit close to his heart. Between his series of Detroit projects, working with the Detroit Pistons and shining a spotlight on the D’s up-and-coming talent such as Sada Baby, Kash Doll and Icewear Vezzo, Sean Don has always put on for his city.
Now, the 33-year-old rapper is looking to keep his Motor City neighbors entertained in a different way by building a movie theater in downtown Detroit. Big Sean took to social media on Thursday (November 11) to share the first photo of the theater, which is currently under construction.
“Building my 1st movie theatre in Detroit, pandemic slowed us down but it’s on the way!!!” he wrote on Instagram. “A dream come true, what else should I put in here? Arcade? Lounge? Bowling? A intimate Venue? Community Center? Let me know.”

Sean Don’s big-picture project received a round of applause from his followers. “YOU GO BOOOOOYYYYY!!!! You better build your city up!!!!! So proud,” actress Taraji P. Henson wrote in the comments section.
The movie theater will be named The Sean Anderson Theatre — after Big Sean’s real name — and is a partnership with Emagine Entertainment, a chain of luxury movie theaters that operates throughout the Midwest. An opening date has yet to be announced.
Big Sean first revealed his plans to open a movie theater in Detroit in 2018 in an effort to give inner-city kids an opportunity to enjoy new movies.
“There Literally is NOT ONE MOVIE THEATRE IN THE CITY OF DETROIT THAT PLAYS NEW MOVIES, ONLY IN THE SUBURBS!!!” he wrote on Instagram at the time. “Yesterday we took 1,000 kids from a Detroit Public Schools and took them to see Black Panther as a field trip. I think it’s important they see super heroes of all shades and that look like most of them, and support it.”
As for his own movie theater, he wrote, “I wanted to show the city and Detroit Public Schools that a kid from DPS that’s the same color as most of them can be a owner and a CEO too and open big business in uncharted territory!”
Opening a movie theater appears to have been on Big Sean’s wish list for even longer, having rapped about such plans on “No Hearts, No Love,” from his 2017 Double Or Nothing album with Metro Boomin.
“I’m less focused on props and more on property/Done put so much back in my hood that I changed the economy/I’m ’bout to build a movie theater downtown properly/And help revive the heart of the city, just keep on watchin’ me,” he spit.
Big Sean will no doubt be looking to recoup some of his movie theater construction costs from the $6 million he claims his former G.O.O.D. Music boss Kanye West owes him.
The news emerged following Kanye’s explosive Drink Champs interview last week, in which he said signing the Detroit rapper is “the worst thing” he’s ever done. Sean revealed last month he’s no longer signed to G.O.O.D. Music after almost 15 years on the label.
Sean Don is currently looking to sit down for his own Drink Champs interview with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN. Get the popcorn ready.
