Canada's Haviah Mighty Makes History As First Female Artist To Win Best Rap Album At Juno Awards
Canada lyricist Haviah Mighty made history on Sunday (May 15) as the first woman to ever win Best Rap Album at the 2022 Juno Awards.
During her acceptance speech, the rapper shouted out her loyal fans and gave praise to women in Hip Hop.
“Thank you for the love man, I wasn’t really expecting this,” she said. “I just gotta say thank you so much to my team, thank you so much to Mighty Gang thank you to my family and friends I could not have done this alone. And for those of you who haven’t heard of Haviah Mighty, I’m gonna be back on this stage to show you why I’m here. I’m gonna be performing and, this one is for women in Hip Hop thank you so much.”
Haviah did indeed return later that evening to perform her tracks “So So” and “Protest” off of the award-winning project Stock Exchange. She took to Instagram after the show to give another thank you for the award.
“Stock Exchange won Best Rap Album/EP of the year at @thejunoawards last night,” Haviah wrote. “Love to everybody who helped bring this project to life – honestly I’m speechless so not gonna long talk this one. Just tryna shift the landscape a lil bit u get meee. Grateful and humbled to be the first woman to win in this category.”
She added in a separate post that the, “Best part about winning this award was being with my mom in the moment,” before writing in another IG post that “Cloud 9” was on her side when she tore up the stage for her performance.
“How can you not be hype when @deborahcox & @chrisbosh introduce your first performance at the JUNOs?” Haviah wrote. “Cloud 9 on my side, but we came for the stage thooo, merging our cultural celebration and trauma through this artistic medley.”
Haviah Mighty’s Stock Exchange mixtape dropped on November 12, 2021, and arrived after she had previously won the Polaris Prize in 2019 for her project 13th Floor, making her the first rapper to ever claim the award.
