Freddie Gibbs & Rick Ross Reimagine Raekwon Classic With 'Ice Cream' Video

Freddie Gibbs continued to ramp up anticipation for the “rap album of the year” on Thursday (March 31) by rolling out a new single featuring another Hip Hop kingpin.

With Rick Ross playing the Ghostface Killah to his Raekwon, Gangsta Gibbs reimagines the Wu-Tang Clan legend’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… classic “Ice Cream” as a modern-day trap anthem.

“Dope boat go skrrt-skrrt, yeah, yeah/34 for that work-work, yeah, yeah/Dope fiend got a pipe dream, yeah/Serve my neighbors thirty-four flavors, I got ice cream, yeah,” he raps before name-dropping Master P, Shaquille O’Neal and Fetty Wap.

Behind the boards, Kenny Beats — who produced the bulk of Gibbs’ last solo album, 2018’s Freddie — beefs up RZA’s original production by building a bruising, bass-heavy soundbed around the chilly Earl Klugh guitar loop sample.

“Ice Cream” comes complete with a fittingly snowy video, which finds Freddie Gibbs serving his product from a custom ice cream truck — another nod to The Chef’s original recipe.

Gangsta Gibbs and Rick Ross previously connected on “Scottie Beam” from 2020’s Grammy-nominated Alfredo, while Raekwon guested on Gibbs’ 2014 Madlib collaboration album Piñata.

“Ice Cream” is the latest serving from the Gary, Indiana rapper’s upcoming album SSS — short for Soul Sold Separately — following “Black Illuminati” featuring Jadakiss, the ScHoolboy Q-assisted “Gang Signs” and the Nas-sampling “Big Boss Rabbit.”

In addition to Kenny Beats, the album is confirmed to feature production from heavyweights including Pharrell, Boi-1da, Jake One, Three 6 Mafia’s DJ Paul, Tay Keith and KAYTRANADA, as well as his Bandana and Alfredo accomplices Madlib and The Alchemist.

An official release date has yet to be announced, but during a recent appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Freddie Gibbs hinted SSS will arrive in June. In the meantime, revisit Raekwon’s original “Ice Cream” below.
