Issa Rae On Which Artists Helped Write Original Songs For 'Rap Sh!t'

Issa Rae is getting ready to make her return to HBOMax with her brand new show Rap Sh!t, which is set to premiere on July 21.

The show follows the story of two former high school friends from Miami who reunite to form a rap group. The show features all original music, which Issa recently revealed was written by actual rappers.

During a visit to Late Night With Seth Meyers, Issa spoke about the artists who helped her pen the original songs for the series, which includes acts such as PineappleCITI, Ncognita and Dreezy. According to the Insecure creator, the whole process was very elaborate.

“We were able to have a traditional writers room, which was really funny. Brilliant writers, some of them were from Miami. And then, just to be able to have authentic rap—like the music has to be good, they actually have to be good rappers, we got to employ some of my favorite rap artists,” Rae said, mentioning the three rappers mentioned above.

She continued: “They wrote lyrics for the characters, and we had music camps to make music for the show, and it was like an intricate process. And then, of course, the two kind of met up, and it was great. I’m really proud of the music on the show.”

Issa Rae won’t appear on the show as she opted for a behind-the-scenes role and will have Aida Osman and KaMillion lead the way with their characters. The first season of Rap Sh!t will have eight episodes in total, with the first two arriving on July 21.

Besides Issa Rae, City Girls’ JT and Yung Miami will also work behind the scenes on the show, serving as executive producers, while Devonte Hynes is the show’s music composer.
