TONY DEYOUNG: FROM TRAGEDY TO TRIUMPH
In an emotional and deeply personal exclusive interview with HipHop Since 1987, Tony DeYoung, the talented rapper, opens up about his tumultuous childhood, marked by abandonment, neglect, and resilience.
HipHop Since 1987: Tony, thank you for sharing your story with us. Can you start by telling us about your childhood and what it was like growing up with an absent father and a mother struggling with addiction?
Tony DeYoung: Growing up, my dad was never really in the picture. He abandoned me and my brother when we were young. My mom, on the other hand, was struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. I remember Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, she’d be at the bar, leaving my brother and me to fend for ourselves.
HipHop Since 1987: That must have been incredibly difficult for you and your brother. How did you cope with the lack of stability and support in your life?
Tony DeYoung: We didn’t have much, but my grandfather Alvah DeYoung stepped in and became a steady presence in our lives. He’d pick us up from mom’s house, take us to his place, and make sure we had food on the table. He was our rock, our guiding light.
HipHop Since 1987: It’s clear that your grandfather Alvah played a significant role in your life. Can you tell us more about how he helped you and your brother?
Tony DeYoung: Gramp, as we called him, was the one who made sure we had everything we needed. He’d take us shopping, buy us clothes, and make sure we had food in our bellies. He was the one who instilled in us the importance of hard work, discipline, and perseverance.
HipHop Since 1987: Your music is a reflection of your experiences and emotions. How do you channel your past into your art, and what message do you hope to convey to your listeners?
Tony DeYoung: My music is my therapy. It’s how I process my emotions and experiences. I hope that my story can inspire others who may be going through similar struggles. I want my listeners to know that they’re not alone, that there’s hope for a better future.
HipHop Since 1987: Finally, Tony, what’s next for you? Any upcoming projects or collaborations that you can share with us?
Tony DeYoung: I have several projects in the works, including a new album and collaborations with other artists. I’m excited to share my new music with my fans and to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in hip-hop.
