YoungBoy Never Broke Again Says Music Went From Being Fun To A Job
YoungBoy Never Broke Again has solidified himself as a bona fide force in Hip Hop and he just became legally able to drink earlier this month. With three projects already released this year and another on the way coming in November, the Baton Rouge native’s work ethic is unmatched, but YoungBoy admits the grind is starting to feel like more a job than when he first started rapping.
YB went from his former motto of recording at least five songs a day to about five songs a month.
“I used to have fun with it,” he explained in an interview with Complex. “It grew out of fun to kind of being like a job now. Everything in the middle, outside of making music, is fun. I started taking it serious for the money point of it.”
With 47 Billboard Hot 100 hits to his name, which matches the likes of music deities J. Cole, Prince and Paul McCartney, YoungBoy said the thought of making a hit isn’t really in his mind when recording.
“I don’t be trying to make hits,” YB said. “When I was little, I used to try. But it is some different shit that comes with a song being a hit now, I guess. It’s natural.”
YoungBoy’s career has been hampered by mounting legal troubles, with his most recent arrest taking place in September. Still, the 21-year-old finds only lessons in his hiccups with law enforcement.
“I always thought that I was fucking up in life, for a long time,” YoungBoy continued. “But I had to realize that I was never fucking up. I was just always learning and growing. I was always winning. I was never losing.”
The “Make No Sense” artist was arrested along with 15 others in his hometown of Baton Rouge on September 28 on drug, felony possession and stolen firearms charges.
“Kentrell is not guilty of any crimes,” YoungBoy’s attorney James Manasseh told WAFB-9. “There’s nothing in the report that indicates that he did anything wrong. They arrested several people and there was no indication that he had any guns or drugs on him at the time of the arrest. I ultimately believe he will be found innocent in all of this.”
Additionally, YoungBoy is being investigated for an assault that allegedly took place at a recording studio in Harris County, Texas earlier in October. The Harris County Sheriff’s office is currently looking into YoungBoy and others in his camp’s involvement in the altercation.
Look for YoungBoy’s joint project with Rich The Kid Nobody Safe arriving on November 13.
