Jay-Z Returns to the Offensive with Explosive Roots Picnic Freestyle

It was not long ago that Jay-Z spoke on how battle rap may not be the best thing for hip hop during an interview in the aftermath of the Kendrick-Drake feud. However, now that things are personal, the legendary rapper is back on the offensive.

During his performance with The Roots, Jay-Z freestyled on stage and took shots at a bunch of rappers that have irked him in the last year or so. Nobody was spared. Drake, Nicki Minaj, Tory Lanez, Kanye West, and Dame Dash all found themselves in the crosshairs of his lyrical assault.

Perhaps the most prominent shot was directed at Drake, who had previously taken subliminal jabs at Jay-Z on the track ‘Janice STFU’ from his latest album, Iceman. While Drake did not explicitly name the mogul, he alluded to ‘Jigga’ and ‘Roc Nation’ with bars suggesting the “jig is up.” In classic Hov fashion, Jay-Z clapped back during his freestyle: “The jig is up/N***a I’m up 10/ Wrong chart, champ, you gotta look up again/N****s look up to HOV/I never looked up to them.”

The freestyle also addressed long-time associate Dame Dash, referencing a public incident regarding his health, and Nicki Minaj, whom Jay-Z criticized for her ongoing commentary regarding Tidal and Roc Nation. Furthermore, he sent warning shots to Kanye West, suggesting that the artist’s bravado is largely confined to social media platforms rather than real-world interactions.

Finally, Jay-Z addressed the incarcerated Tory Lanez, referencing the legal and personal turmoil surrounding the Megan Thee Stallion shooting incident. To anyone who interpreted his earlier comments on battle rap as a sign of weakness, this performance served as a definitive reminder that Jay-Z remains one of the most formidable lyricists in the history of the genre.
