Common Explains Why He & Tiffany Haddish Broke Up
From Erykah Badu and Serena Williams to Taraji P. Henson and Angela Rye, Common has dated numerous famous women throughout his career, but has evidently yet to find “the one.”
The Chicago rapper and father of one was most recently involved with comedian Tiffany Haddish and having dated for over a year, it looked like their relationship might’ve had legs. But in November, it was reported the couple had called it quits.
During an appearance on Hollywood Unlocked With Jason Lee Uncensored on Thursday (December 9), Common confirmed that he and Haddish had broken up while shedding light on the reasons behind their split, which he called a “mutual” decision.

According to the Be rapper, their respective careers simply didn’t allow them to enough time and energy to “feed” their relationship, especially once the COVID-19 lockdown lifted.
“Once Tiffany and I got back on the move, it really didn’t allow for us to spend as much time and put as much energy into our relationship,” he explained. “I don’t think the love really dispersed; I just think we weren’t feeding the relationship.
“Neither one of us is going to stop! We both care about our crafts and what we do. And we care about love, too, and partnership, but I think the energy that has been put into our careers and continuing to want to do the things that we do for ourselves and for the people, it was harder for me to balance all of that and keep the relationship fed.”
He added, “I don’t want to be one foot in, one foot out. It wasn’t about anyone else or another relationship … It’s hard when the other person is working just as much [as you] to actually give time and love and nurturing to the relationship.”

Despite going their separate ways, Common still has a lot of love for Tiffany Haddish, for whom he had nothing but kind things to say.
“Tiffany, for me, is one of the best people I’ve met in life — one of the best-hearted and most authentic and caring people that I’ve met,” he said. “And that’s what made me love her and be in love with her and want to be in a relationship with her and grow with her.
“We had a real healthy and loving — it probably was the most mature relationship I have been in, meaning the communication, the respect… all around, man.”
Common and Tiffany Haddish began dating during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 after meeting on the set of the movie The Kitchen, which they both starred in.
“He was my love interest. I made out with him in the movie and we became friends and it wasn’t anything sexual,” Haddish explained during an appearance on Jackass star Steve-O’s Wild Ride! podcast. “Our friendship was getting a little more than friendship but not quite ’cause COVID happened and we were like quarantined.
“So then it was like we were FaceTiming all the time and I’m like, ‘You should check out Bumble. Why don’t we do this on Bumble? We can do charities. We can do things for the frontline workers and kids, too.’ We got that money and made all these donations and it was really cool. Then he got tested for everything and I got tested for everything and yeah, we’ve been fuckin’.”
Haddish even hinted at the possibility of marriage in September during an interview on the SmartLess podcast with actors Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes, saying, “If he decides he wants to marry me, cool. I don’t want a ring, I want an apartment building.”
