Master P Weighs In On Snoop Dogg’s Death Row Acquisition + Explains Why He Still Prays For Suge Knight
There was a time when Snoop Dogg was signed to No Limit, Master P’s self-made Hip Hop empire. During Sunday’s (March 20) episode of TV One’s UNCENSORED series, Master P talked about his relationship with Snoop and his jump from Death Row Records to No Limit in 1998.
It’s a move Snoop will never regret. As he told The Breakfast Club in 2020, “Master P saved my life. I was gonna put an album out called Fuck Death Row and Mack 10 was gonna give me a million dollars to put it out.” But Master P convinced Snoop it was a bad idea, and he decided to scrap the project. In a recent interview with HipHopDX, Master P spoke about Snoop Dogg’s acquisition of the Death Row Records brand and applauded the legendary West Coast rapper for how far he’s come.
“I’m proud Snoop is in a place to be able to acquire a company where he started from that he had so much adversity with,” he says. “That just goes to show you it’s all about raising bosses. My thing is, I feel like No Limit is a university and Snoop is the highest student that come through that. That’s why I got these to you show y’all this.”
Master P fumbles around his office looking for his latest Rap Snacks venture, a package dedicated to Snoop. Once he finds it, he continues, “He’s a graduate of No Limit university. He’s a hallowed historian. We got the Rap Snacks. It’s all about product. I keep telling y’all, product outweighs talent. The Snoop Dogg bag is incredible. This the Snoop Dogg, the OG cheddar and cheese [laughs].”
Both Master P and Snoop Dogg have become incredibly successful over the years, amassing plenty of wealth along the way. They’re at a point where they can really do whatever they want, including Crip walking at the Super Bowl LVI Pepsi Halftime show.
“That’s what it’s about where we could work together, do our own thing,” Master P continues. “It’s enough out there for all of us. I just respect Snoop for not just being a incredible artist, and being able to acquire Death Row Records, but I love what he do, giving back in the community to be able to create that football league. That’s why I give him his flowers. Now, we going to celebrate him now. We should be able to celebrate each other. That’s what hip hop should be. It’s about love. We got to get rid of this hate.”
Master P touches on the difference between himself and former Death Row CEO Suge Knight during the UNCENSORED episode, explaining he ran his business with love, peace and the intention to uplift each other, while Knight ruled with fear. But despite Knight’s current incarceration and all the controversy surrounding his legacy, Master P still wishes him nothing but the best.
“I still pray for Suge,” he says. “He opened up a lot of doors for a lot of people and I just pray that God change his heart and let him know that he can help people even with being incarcerated, he can help more people. I just hope he find God in there, if he don’t already have, so we can get on another page.”
Knight was arrested in 2015 for the fatal hit-and-run of Terry Carter that took place near the set of Straight Outta Compton. Following the firing and hiring of multiple attorneys, Knight finally went to trial in 2018 where he pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter.
The judge sentenced Knight to 28 years in prison: 22 years for running over the victim and six years because it was Knight’s third strike under California’s three-strikes law. Knight is currently incarcerated at RJ Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego and isn’t eligible for parole until October 2034.
