Lil Flip Ranks Beyonce, Travis Scott & Himself As Top 3 Houston Artists
Houston’s place in Hip Hop is unprecedented. The Texas city has birthed a plethora of rap’s biggest artists over the years including, most recently, Megan Thee Stallion, who was recently honored by Mayor Sylvester Turner with her own day and a key to the city.
Lil Flip, another Houston legend, was happy for Meg when asked on VladTV to share his thoughts on her accomplishment.
“I think it’s great! I mean, she did a whole bunch of shit for the city and do, you know,” he said. “Well-deserved. She’s won Grammys and stuff like that so, yes, salute to Megan. That’s a great thing.”
When asked if Meg was the biggest artist out of Houston, Lil Flip agreed Meg was the biggest rapper and then chose to rank his top 3 artists out of H-Town. He of course had to throw himself in the mix.
“Not the biggest artist. The biggest artist out of Houston is Beyoncé,” Flip clarified. “Then it’s Flip, but Travis Scott, he’s selling a shitload of records and they count streams now as sales, you know what I mean? But it’s like a different measuring stick but he on the way up there… I’ve sold millions of records worldwide. And a lot of places don’t have Soundscan so even some of my mixtapes, I’ve sold millions of.”
He continued, “Everybody don’t have Soundscan so it might not show up in the numbers, but it was plenty mom and pop stores that was ordering 20, 30 thousand copies of The Leprechaun every two months, and we just cashin’ out,” he said. “That’s why Texas, we hustlers. Independent. We gon’ get it on our own. Definitely.”
Lil Flip was referring to his underground 2000 debut, which moved over 200,000 copies and recently spawned a 2020 sequel The Leprechaun 2. The Houston rhymer most recently dropped off his Tum Tum collab, Made In Texas 2, which featured appearances from Chevy Woods, Big Shasta and others.
If Beyoncé is truly the biggest artist out of Houston, then her hometown must have been going crazy on Thursday (June 16) when the singer revealed she’d be dropping a new album titled Renaissance on July 29. This marks the R&B queen’s seventh studio album and first since 2016’s 3x-platinum smash hit Lemonade.
